Castello dei Pio

The Castello dei Pio extends across Piazza dei Martiri and Piazzale Re Astolfo, featuring multiple structures with towers, fortresses, and Renaissance architectural elements.

Initially constructed in the 12th century with the Passerino Tower, the castle underwent major transformations under Alberto III Pio during the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

The castle houses several museums, including the Museum of the City, displaying local archaeological findings, and a museum dedicated to Italian woodcutting established in 1936.

Visitors can access the castle museums from Friday to Sunday between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM, then from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with free admission.

The Salone dei Mori contains frescoes by Giovanni del Sega from 1506, maintaining the traditional design concepts of Estense reception halls.
