Campo nell'Elba, Italian comune
Campo nell'Elba is a commune on the island of Elba, in the Province of Livorno, covering the southwestern portion of the island from the Gulf of Lacona to the hamlet of Pomonte. It groups several settlements together, including Marina di Campo along the coast and the hillside villages of Sant'Ilario in Campo and San Piero in Campo.
The settlements that make up the commune have Roman-era roots, with sites in Sant'Ilario and San Piero showing evidence of ancient occupation later built over by churches. For centuries the area lived off farming and fishing before the granite quarries of San Piero became a source of work and trade from the medieval period onward.
In the harbor of Marina di Campo, fishing boats still go out in the morning and return by evening, setting the pace of the day. The local table revolves around fresh fish and simple preparations served at small restaurants facing the sea.
Marina di Campo is the main hub and the easiest starting point for getting around, with the largest beach and most services concentrated there. To reach the hillside villages and smaller coves like Fetovaia or Seccheto, a scooter or rental car is the most practical option.
The granite quarried around San Piero was shipped to the mainland and used in construction projects far beyond the island, giving a small hillside village an outsized role in Italian stonework. Some of the quarry sites still show the marks left by the workers' tools, readable like a kind of open-air record of the craft.
