Parco Regionale di Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane

Parco Regionale di Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane, Regional park in Basilicata, Italy.

Description

Parco Regionale di Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane is a protected area spanning about 27,000 hectares across Potenza and Matera provinces. The landscape transitions between Mediterranean scrub, dense woodlands, and rocky plateaus, interspersed with small villages and walking trails.

History

The area shows traces of Lucanian culture, with the archaeological site of Monte Croccia containing fortifications from the 4th century BC. These remains reveal how early inhabitants used the highlands for defensive purposes.

Culture

The five villages within the park celebrate ancient tree rituals, particularly the Maggio Olivetese festival and the ceremonies of Accettura, which show how communities honor their connection to the land. Visitors can witness these traditions during the season and see how local identity is rooted in forest life.

Practical

The park has marked hiking and cycling routes, with visitor centers available to learn about local plants and animals. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the terrain and enjoying the scenery.

Did you know?

The park is home to rare plant species like Onosma Lucana and Dalmatian Toadflax, which grow only in the woodlands near Pietrapertosa. These specialized plants thrive in the harsh mountain climate and reveal the botanical diversity of the location.
