Gulf of Squillace, Coastal inlet in Calabria, Italy.

The Gulf of Squillace is a coastal inlet on the eastern Ionian shore of Calabria, stretching between the Capo Rizzuto headland and the town of Squillace. The waterfront alternates between rocky cliffs with sea caves and gentler sandy coves, creating varied swimming and diving spots.

In ancient times, this gulf was called Scylleticus Sinus and served as a crucial maritime crossing for Greek, Roman, and Byzantine traders and armies. Its position on major sea routes shaped the development of coastal settlements that emerged here over many centuries.

The small towns around this gulf still depend on fishing as part of daily life, and you can see traditional boats and nets along the waterfront. Local food markets and family-run restaurants showcase seafood that has been caught here for generations.

You can reach the water from several coastal towns along the gulf, each offering different access points to beaches or boat ramps. It is good to check weather conditions beforehand, as currents and winds can shift quickly in this part of the sea.

This gulf sits at the narrowest point of the Italian peninsula, where only about 30 kilometers of land separate it from the Gulf of Saint Euphemia on the other side. This geographical quirk makes the region a striking place to grasp how close two different seas are here.
