University of Sassari, university in Sassari, Italy
University of Sassari is a higher education institution in Sassari, northern Italy on the island of Sardinia with over 40 departments and more than 13,000 students. The campus combines historic stone buildings with modern facilities and includes classrooms, libraries, a botanical garden, and parks and cafes for gathering and study.
The institution was founded in 1562 as a Jesuit school for philosophy and theology and became an official university in 1617 by royal decree. It expanded over centuries with new fields including law, medicine, and agriculture, with the historic main palace from the early 1600s still standing.
The university shares its name with the city and is deeply woven into local life. Students and teachers share the streets with residents, and the institution participates in festivals and community projects, bringing education and local culture together.
The campus sits in central Sassari near the city center and public transportation, making it easy for students and visitors to arrive by bus or on foot. Diverse facilities including sports halls, modern classrooms, and study areas allow visitors to explore the institution and attend events or guided tours.
The Aula Magna, the grand hall for ceremonies, features wall paintings by artist Mario Delitala depicting historic professors and students in vivid colors. This artfully decorated hall serves not only for official events but also tells the institution's story through its decoration.
