San Giovanni Grisostomo, Venice, Renaissance church in Cannaregio, Venice, Italy
San Giovanni Grisostomo is a Renaissance church in Venice built with a square footprint and Greek cross floor plan. Its interior shows balanced proportions throughout, while the exterior walls display reddish-gold plaster that gives the building character.
The original building was founded in 1080 and rebuilt after a fire in 1475. The Renaissance structure you see today was completed under architect Mauro Codussi and has remained largely unchanged since then.
The church is dedicated to Saint John Chrysostom, whose name refers to his famous eloquence as a preacher. Visitors can see how this veneration shaped the choice of artworks that fill the interior.
The church welcomes visitors daily and guided tours are available to explain the architectural features. It helps to check opening times ahead of time, as they can vary depending on services and seasons.
The interior walls display a series of detailed canvases that tell the story of Saint John Chrysostom's life. These paintings show scenes from his years as a bishop in Constantinople and his influence on the early church.
