Teatro Malibran, Opera house in Venice, Italy
Teatro Malibran is an opera house in the Cannaregio district of Venice, built with five tiers of boxes, a wide stalls section, and an enlarged orchestra pit. The stage is sized for full productions, and the venue also serves as a secondary house for Teatro La Fenice.
The building opened in 1678 under the name Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo and was among the largest theaters in Venice at the time. It was renamed in honor of Maria Malibran in the 19th century, shortly after her death in 1836.
The theater takes its name from the Spanish mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran, who performed here and refused payment for her concerts. Her portrait still hangs inside, and her name gives the building a personal identity that goes beyond its function as a performance venue.
The theater is near Campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo and easy to reach on foot from many parts of the city. Performances often sell out, so it is worth checking availability and booking ahead of your visit.
The theater was built on the site where Marco Polo's family home once stood, making the ground beneath it one of the most historically layered spots in the city. A water retention system installed under the stage helps protect the building from Venice's regular flooding.
