Rocca Silvana

Rocca Silvana is a medieval stone fortress in Selvena and Castell'Azzara positioned on a hilltop overlooking the Fiora River valley. The structure features defensive walls, towers, and remains of a noble residence that commands views across the landscape.

The Aldobrandeschi family built this fortress in the Middle Ages to control their territory and secure strategic positions. From the 11th century onward, the site faced multiple sieges as its location made it contested between rival powers in the region.

The fortress shows medieval building methods of Tuscany and reflects the construction techniques that were typical for defensive structures of that era. This architecture shapes the look of the region even today and tells of the craftsmanship of that time.

The interior of the fortress is not open to visitors, but you can walk around the exterior walls and view the stone fortifications set in the natural surroundings. The location requires walking gear and offers a good chance to explore the landscape around the valley.

Ancient mercury deposits lay near the fortress, giving the area extra economic and political importance. These raw materials made the region attractive to multiple power groups and contributed to the frequent conflicts over control.
