Comiso Airport, Commercial airport in Comiso, Sicily, Italy
Comiso Airport is a commercial air terminal located between the towns of Comiso and Chiaramonte Gulfi in the Ragusa province of southeastern Sicily. The facility sits at 230 meters elevation and handles scheduled flights to various Italian destinations.
The airport was built in 1939 as a military facility and operated for military aviation for decades. Extensive renovations in 2004 transformed it for civil use, and scheduled passenger flights began in 2007.
The airport connects travelers to the Iblei region, where ancient ruins, baroque towns, and local food traditions shape daily life and draw visitors. The connection makes it easy to reach these cultural destinations in southeastern Sicily.
The airport has a runway of about 8,300 feet (2,538 meters) and a modern control tower for safe operations. It is located roughly 25 miles (40 km) from Ragusa and can be reached by car or shuttle service.
The airport operated exclusively for military aircraft for decades before opening to passengers, making it one of Sicily's newer commercial hubs. This late transition to civil aviation gives it a fresher, more modern feel compared to older regional airports.
