Santa Maria della Passione Church

Santa Maria della Passione Church, Renaissance church in Municipio 4, Milan, Italy

Santa Maria della Passione is a Renaissance church in Milan with three aisles separated by granite columns that support the structure. Large windows fill the space with light and reveal the main nave where people enter to pray or sit in quiet reflection.

Construction started in 1486 under architect Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, a prominent Renaissance designer. In the late 16th century, the building underwent a major redesign that changed its interior layout from a Greek cross shape to a Latin cross.

The name refers to the Passion of Christ, which appears throughout the interior through painted religious scenes. You can walk past these visual stories and see how they guided the faith and prayer of people over centuries.

The church is located in the eastern part of Milan and is reachable on foot from the metro, which has several stops nearby. It is best to visit during daylight hours when natural light flows through the large windows and illuminates the interior clearly.

The monastery next door is now home to the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, which stores thousands of original music manuscripts. Students perform and study in these spaces, creating an active link between this historic building and Milan's living music culture today.
