Forte Mollinary, Military fort in Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, Italy

Forte Mollinary is a stone fortification perched on a cliff above the Adige Valley and surrounded by a deep protective moat. The installation features two main batteries and an irregular floor plan that adapts to the hilly terrain.

The fort arose between 1849 and 1852 under Field Marshal Radetzky's orders to secure the Austrian border in this region. It was part of a chain of fortifications built to protect the railway line to the Brenner Pass.

The fortress was built using local red stone that was abundant in the region. Its construction reflects the military concerns of a time when this area was strategically contested.

One reaches the fort via a walking path from Monte's center, which involves some steep climbing. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be aware that certain sections of the structure pose collapse hazards.

The fort was equipped with about 24 cannons operated by a specialized artillery unit. This defensive capacity made it one of the most heavily armed fortifications in the area.
