Fort Rivoli, Military fortification in Rivoli Veronese, Italy.
Fort Rivoli is a military fortification on Monte Castello at 227 meters elevation with a two-story battery block and cannon positions arranged in a semicircular formation. The structure contains extensive galleries, original cannon stations, and collections of historical weapons.
The fortification was built between 1849 and 1852 under Field Marshal Radetzky and named after Lieutenant Ludwig von Wohlgemuth. It was constructed during the period of Austrian rule in northern Italy.
The fort displays Austrian military design using local marble from the Verona region. Today it houses exhibits about World War I that visitors can see throughout the rooms.
Access to the fort is primarily available on Sundays and holidays with extensive galleries to explore. Visitors should expect stairs and uneven paths since it is a historic mountain installation.
The fort operated as part of a comprehensive defensive system together with the Batteria Bassa di Rivoli positioned in the plain below. This combined arrangement allowed the hilltop position to protect and support the lower battery.
