Hochjochbiwak, Mountain shelter in Stilfs, Italy
Hochjochbiwak is a mountain shelter located at 3535 meters elevation in the Ortles-Cevedale group, serving as a base for mountaineers crossing this alpine terrain. The facility provides ten sleeping spots, electric lighting powered by solar panels, and essential supplies for those traversing the area.
The shelter was established in 1972 by the Italian Alpine Club section of Cantù, with the structure transported to the site via helicopter. This aerial delivery allowed a functional refuge to be built at such extreme elevation.
The construction of this mountain refuge demonstrates the strong connection between the Italian Alpine Club and local communities in maintaining mountain infrastructure.
The shelter is best reached via mountain trails that require several hours of hiking, so visitors should be well-prepared physically before attempting the climb. It is wise to arrive early in the day, as capacity is limited and conditions vary greatly depending on the season and weather.
From this shelter, climbers can access routes to Monte Zebrù via the North Ridge and Monte Ortles through the South Ridge, with paths crossing the Vedretta dello Zebrù.
