Geisterspitze, Alpine summit in Stilfs, Italy
Geisterspitze rises to 3,467 meters (11,375 feet) between Stilfs and Bormio with steep ridges and a southeastern face covered by permanent snow fields. The mountain offers multiple routes and ridge lines with varying climbing difficulty.
Local mountaineers established the first documented climbing routes in the late 1800s and named the peak Geisterspitze, meaning Peak of Spirits. These early explorations made the summit a recognized destination in the Alps.
The mountain forms part of the Ortler-Cevedale range and attracts climbers from both German and Italian mountaineering traditions. The route to the summit passes through typical alpine scenery with views of surrounding peaks.
The ascent begins from the Stelvio Pass parking area and follows a service road to Pirovano refuge before climbing the slopes via marked paths. The best climbing window is July through September when snow conditions are most stable.
A summit cross marks the highest point and is visible from both the western and eastern slopes, offering long sightlines across the Alps. On clear days climbers can identify several nearby mountain groups from this vantage point.
