Bormio, Alpine resort town in Province of Sondrio, Italy
Bormio is a municipality in the Province of Sondrio at 1,225 meters (4,019 feet) elevation, positioned where three valleys meet near the Stelvio pass. The medieval center features narrow lanes that open onto small squares framed by Renaissance facades.
The Etruscans inhabited the valley before Roman times, with the site first recorded in writing during the 6th century as Aquae Burmiae. Its position on key alpine routes made it a strategic point for trade and military movements.
Thermal springs have drawn visitors to this alpine town for more than two thousand years and still shape daily life here. Many residents use the public baths regularly, keeping a tradition alive that has survived through every century.
The ski area spans 50 kilometers (31 miles) of marked runs, including the Pista Stelvio used in international competitions. Lifts begin at the edge of the old town center and carry winter sports enthusiasts to higher slopes.
Local thermal springs maintain temperatures between 38 and 41 degrees Celsius (100 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year, making them the warmest natural springs across the entire alpine region. Some bathing facilities sit inside caves shaped over centuries by the thermal water itself.
