Province of Sondrio

The Province of Sondrio is an alpine region in Lombardy that stretches across mountain landscapes between Switzerland and neighboring Italian provinces. The territory is shaped by several valleys and served by road and railway networks.

After the fall of the Lombard Kingdom, the region came under control of the Holy Roman Empire, with local noble families like the Capitanei of Vizzola ruling the Valtellina from 1040 onwards. This medieval period shaped the region's political structure.

The province is known for its wine tradition, especially in the Valtellina Valley, where varieties like Sassella and Grumello are grown on steep mountain slopes. These wines form part of local identity and are celebrated at regional festivals.

The region is well-served by a dense network of roads and railways that connect multiple valleys. Visitors find year-round activities here, from winter sports to hiking through natural areas.

Local farmers have built complex terraces on mountain slopes over centuries, supported by impressive dry stone walls. This craftsmanship shapes the landscape today and shows remarkable skill.
