Sondrio, Administrative center in Valtellina, Italy
Sondrio is a commune in northern Lombardy sitting at 360 meters elevation. The town is framed by mountains whose slopes are covered in terraced vineyards that produce regional wines.
A Roman garrison formed the starting point of the settlement, which became a permanent town during the Lombard era. At that time the place received the name Sundrium, which gradually evolved into its current form.
Garibaldi Square holds the Palazzo Sassi, now home to the Art and History Museum. The collection displays objects from the valley and offers insight into how people have lived in this Alpine area over the centuries.
The train station links the town to many places in Valtellina and Lombardy through regular connections. From the center most sights are within walking distance, as the old town is compact and easy to explore.
