Castel Masegra, Medieval castle in Sondrio, Italy
Castel Masegra is a medieval castle at the entrance of Valmalenco valley with stone walls, towers, and internal courtyards. The complex overlooks the surrounding mountain landscape and houses a contemporary museum dedicated to mountain culture and heritage.
The fortress was built during the Middle Ages and remained the sole stronghold in Sondrio that survived the 16th-century invasion of Valtellina. Its endurance made it strategically important in the region's history.
The CAST museum displays exhibitions about mountaineering and nature that tell stories of life in the highlands. The displays help visitors understand how people have long lived and worked in this mountain region.
The site opens from February through December with extended weekend hours during summer months. Admission is free, allowing visitors to spend time at their own pace.
A fresco cycle in the dovecote tower depicts scenes from Orlando Furioso and dates to the Renaissance period. This artistic decoration comes as a surprise to visitors exploring a mountain fortress.
