Campodolcino, Italian comune
Campodolcino is a small commune in the Province of Sondrio located in the Valle Spluga at roughly 1,000 meters elevation. The village features closely built traditional stone houses arranged along narrow streets, with the San Giovanni Battista church serving as its historic center and gathering place.
Campodolcino was likely founded during Roman times and lay on an important trade route called the Via Spluga connecting the plains to distant lands. In the Middle Ages, it was part of the independent Valle San Giacomo region and was protected by a castle in the nearby hamlet of Fraciscio.
The name Campodolcino comes from Latin meaning "sweet field". Today, the village serves as a place where traditions are kept alive through local festivals like Spluga Celtica and where visitors experience how mountain communities still value their connection to the land and heritage.
The village sits at an elevation that makes it accessible, but visitors should prepare for mountainous terrain and changeable weather conditions. Infrastructure including accommodations, restaurants, and shops is available, with convenient access to hiking trails and ski slopes in the surrounding mountains.
In Fraciscio, a nearby hamlet, the blessed Luigi Guanella was born, a local figure whose birthplace draws visitors today. Hikers exploring the region can also encounter prehistoric remains and view an ancient bronze knife from the ninth century before Christ discovered at the site.
