The Rape of Proserpina, Baroque marble sculpture in Galleria Borghese, Italy.

The white marble sculpture portrays Pluto forcefully grasping Proserpina, with his fingers pressing into her thigh as she attempts to escape.

Cardinal Scipione Borghese commissioned the sculpture from 23-year-old Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1621, completing it within a year for 450 Roman scudi.

The sculpture represents the Roman mythological narrative of Pluto, god of the underworld, abducting Proserpina, daughter of goddess Ceres.

The sculpture stands 255 centimeters tall and requires visitors to walk around it for a complete understanding of its intricate details.

The marble surface demonstrates Bernini's technical skill in depicting different textures, from Pluto's coarse beard to Proserpina's smooth skin.
