Val Taleggio, Alpine valley in Lombardy, Italy
Val Taleggio is an Alpine valley in Lombardy carved by the Enna River into a narrow 3-kilometer gorge with steep limestone walls. The valley sits between Roncaglia and Sottochiesa within the Orobic Pre-Alps.
Local farmers and dairy makers shaped this valley over centuries, building stone houses with distinctive piöde roofs that still stand today. This architecture reflects the long agricultural tradition of Bergamo province.
Two Protected Designation of Origin cheeses define this place: the soft Taleggio and the blue-veined Strachitunt, made here for generations. These products remain central to local craftsmanship and identity today.
Three main routes provide access: from Val Brembana via San Giovanni Bianco, from Val Brembilla through Gerosa, or from Valsassina via Moggio. Choose your route based on where you are coming from.
Elevation ranges from 800 to 1600 meters, creating different microclimates that support specific plants and farming methods throughout the year. These height differences also influence how cheese-making changes with the seasons.
