Pozzo sacro di Predio Canopoli, Nuragic holy well in Perfugas, Italy

Pozzo sacro di Predio Canopoli is a holy well featuring an entrance atrium, a descending staircase, and a central chamber built from precisely cut limestone blocks sourced from nearby Laerru quarries. This underground structure extends deep into the ground and demonstrates the sophisticated building techniques of ancient builders.

The site was discovered in 1923 when landowner Domenico Canopoli found the ancient structure during work on his property. This discovery revealed an important monument from the Nuragic period, the early Iron Age culture of Sardinia.

The circular chamber with its stone benches shows that this place was used for ritual ceremonies related to water during the Nuragic period. The arrangement of the seating areas suggests that groups gathered here to participate in important community events.

To visit the site, arrange guided tours through the Archaeological and Paleobotanical Museum in Perfugas, as access is limited to protect the ancient structures. Contact the museum in advance to confirm availability and plan your visit accordingly.

Excavations uncovered a bronze bull statue dating to the 7th-6th century BCE, offering clues about animal veneration practices. Alongside a Phoenician bone feline figurine from the 9th-8th century BCE, these finds show that the site held importance for multiple cultures across many centuries.
