Pozzo sacro di Predio Canopoli, Nuragic holy well in Perfugas, Italy
The sacred well features an entrance atrium, descending staircase, and central chamber constructed with precisely cut limestone blocks from nearby Laerru quarries.
The archaeological site was discovered in 1923 when landowner Domenico Canopoli found the ancient structure during work to build a cesspool in his garden.
The circular chamber and stone benches within the well structure indicate its significance for water-related ceremonies during the Nuragic period in Sardinia.
Visitors need to arrange guided tours through the Archaeological and Paleobotanical Museum in Perfugas, as the site maintains restricted access for preservation.
The excavations revealed a bronze bull statue from the 7th-6th century BCE and a Phoenician bone feline figurine from the 9th-8th century BCE.
