Giogo del Maniva, Mountain pass in Brescia Province, Italy
Giogo del Maniva is a mountain pass in Brescia Province that rises to around 1,660 meters (5,450 feet) and stretches for roughly 20 kilometers. The road winds through the terrain with numerous hairpin turns, linking valleys and communities on either side.
People have used this mountain route since ancient times as a way to cross the ridges long before the modern road was built. Over centuries, old footpaths were gradually transformed into the road that exists today, creating a permanent link between mountain communities.
The pass has long served as a vital link for mountain communities on both sides. Along the road, travellers encounter small villages and hamlets that reflect how these areas have depended on this connection for everyday life.
The route is accessible mainly from June through October, as snow and ice make it impassable during winter months. Heavy rain and poor visibility can cause temporary closures even during the season, so it is wise to check weather conditions before heading up.
A ski station sits on the northern side of the pass with slopes for different skill levels. The southern approach features a demanding road that presents additional technical challenges for experienced drivers.
