Rocca d'Anfo, Military fortification in Anfo, Italy.
Rocca d'Anfo is a fortress on the western shore of Lake Idro with multiple defensive structures built across different levels. The complex includes barracks, gun emplacements, and observation posts arranged throughout the site.
The fortress was built by the Venetian Republic in the 15th century to guard the lake from invaders. It was later heavily rebuilt under Napoleon, who added new defenses and military structures to strengthen the position.
The fortress functions as a museum maintained by local volunteers who preserve and share the military history of northern Italy.
Access is only by guided tour, which you need to book ahead of time. Wear sturdy shoes as you will walk across uneven terrain and climb numerous steps throughout the site.
Different sections reveal distinct building periods, with older Venetian gun batteries sitting alongside later French barracks. If you look carefully, you can spot carvings and markings left behind that tell the story of how the place changed over time.
