Parco naturale regionale di Montemarcello - Magra, Regional park in Province of La Spezia, Italy.
The park covers 4,320 hectares and includes the Magra River, its tributary the Vara River, and the Caprione headland overlooking the Gulf of La Spezia. Its landscape combines river systems, coastal zones, and forested hillsides into one protected area.
The protected area was created in 1995 by joining the Magra River Park established in 1982 and the Montemarcello Protected Area from 1985. Combining these two separate reserves brought unified management to the entire region.
Local farming practices here keep alive old varieties of apples and olives that have grown in this region for generations. You can see these crops still being tended in gardens and small fields throughout the park.
The park has visitor centers throughout that offer trail maps and local guidance for exploring on foot. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during warmer months, to make your visit more enjoyable.
The wetlands along the Magra serve as a crucial stopover for migrating water birds traveling long distances. Stone circles called cavanei are scattered across the land, ancient dry-stone structures with roots in local history.
