Abbazia della Benedicta

Abbazia della Benedicta is a Benedictine monastery at the foot of Mount Tobbio featuring preserved stone structures from the 11th century. The site includes the abbey ruins along with a modern documentation center established by the Piedmont Region to preserve its history.

The monastery was founded in the 11th century and served as a stopping point for pilgrims traveling to Rome and Santiago de Compostela. After the monks departed, the property passed to the Spinola family before becoming a site of tragedy during World War II.

The name comes from Latin words meaning blessing, reflecting its original purpose as a spiritual center. This sacred function continues today through the memorial role it plays, connecting visitors to the experiences of those who lived and struggled here.

The site features a documentation center that provides information and materials to enhance your visit. Comfortable shoes are recommended as the terrain is hilly and you will need to walk to explore different parts of the ruins.

In April 1944, 147 resistance fighters were killed here during a Nazi roundup, making this a significant memorial site for Italian liberation. Annual memorial ceremonies still bring visitors and officials from across Italy to remember those who died.
