Abbey of San Martino in Campo

The Abbey of San Martino in Campo features ten blind arches on its central apse and stone fragments from Lombard artisans within its walls.

Founded in 1057 by Benedictine monks, the abbey underwent reconstruction in the twelfth century after a structural collapse reduced its original length.

The interior contains a 15th-century fresco depicting Madonna Enthroned with Saints Anthony, Martin, Nicholas, and Lucia by a Tuscan Gothic painter.

The abbey stands at 220 meters above sea level, connecting the Montalbano region to Empoli and Montelupo through medieval pathways.

A 14th-century sandstone door displays the coat of arms of Matteo Frescobaldi, whose family managed the abbey until the 1600s.
