Bisantis bridge, Suspension bridge in Catanzaro, Italy
The Bisantis Bridge spans the Fiumarella valley for 468 meters and stands 112 meters above the ground, built from reinforced concrete. Below the roadway, you see the valley sides with their Mediterranean vegetation, while the structure itself is marked by slender piers and inclined elements.
Engineer Riccardo Morandi designed the structure in 1962 to create a direct link between the northern and southern parts of Catanzaro. Upon its completion, travel time between both sides of the city decreased sharply and made daily life easier for residents.
The span bears since 2001 the name of Fausto Bisantis, a senator from Catanzaro whose memory remains present each time someone crosses. Passing through here, visitors encounter a structure that plays an everyday role in city life and connects thousands of people every day.
Drivers use the span as a main route through the city and reach the opposite neighborhood without long detours. Pedestrians cannot walk across, so the valley is best viewed from adjoining roads nearby.
The V-shaped piers and inclined spandrels show typical features of Morandi's building method, which appeared in several of his major projects. Those who pay attention to details recognize the engineer's signature style in the clean lines of the supporting elements.
