Castello Theodoli

Castello Theodoli is a rectangular fortress in Sambuci with four observation towers at its corners and three floors. The building houses reception halls, private chambers, and service quarters that reflect its past function as a noble residence.

The fortress was inhabited from the 1200s onward by various noble families, including the Orsini, Zanibeccari, Astalli, Piccolomini, and later the Theodoli. These changes in ownership shaped the building's appearance and interior design across multiple centuries.

The interior rooms feature frescoes by Giovan Angelo Canini depicting literary, mythological, and religious subjects. These painted walls tell stories from classical works and sacred texts that visitors encounter while walking through the halls.

The grounds include a park spanning about 55,000 square meters with Italian formal gardens and English landscape design elements. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes to explore the different areas and enjoy the gardens at their own pace.

The park displays hedges shaped to represent the coats of arms of the Theodoli and Astalli families. These topiary-crafted symbols serve as living reminders of the noble lines who inhabited and shaped the castle across centuries.
