Castello Cesi

Castello Cesi is a medieval fortress in San Polo dei Cavalieri with a rectangular layout, central keep, and semicircular watchtowers at each corner. The structure features battlements along its upper walls and overlooks the valley between Sabina and Aniene.

The Orsini family acquired the fortress in the late 14th century and converted it into a military stronghold. It remained an important seat of power in the region for centuries afterward.

The castle served as headquarters for the Academy of the Lynxes, a learned society that gathered scholars and natural philosophers within its walls. It represents the Renaissance appreciation for knowledge and intellectual exchange in this region.

The castle is privately owned and visits require advance arrangements by phone or email contact. It is advisable to contact ahead to confirm whether a visit can be arranged.

An octagonal cistern with small columns and Orsini family crests decorates the castle courtyard. This ornate structure was created by the Zuccari workshop in 1439 and displays the artistic refinement of that era.
