Villa d'Este, Renaissance villa and garden museum in Tivoli, Italy
Villa d'Este is a Renaissance palace museum with terraced gardens in Tivoli, Italy. The complex spreads across several levels with geometrically arranged paths leading to grottoes and fountains.
A cardinal commissioned the transformation of a Benedictine monastery into his summer residence starting in 1550. Work on the waterworks continued for several decades and shaped later garden design across Europe.
The name recalls the Este family from Ferrara, who displayed their influence through elaborate waterworks. Visitors today walk among terraces filled with small pools and waterfalls surrounded by stone figures.
Paved paths between the terraces allow wheelchair users to reach many areas. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as some passages include stairs and may become slippery.
One fountain produces music solely through water pressure, without electricity or mechanical pumps. Originally there was a small water theater with moving figures, which visitors can no longer see today.
