Cathedral of San Lorenzo Martire, Catholic cathedral in Tivoli, Italy.
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo Martire is a Baroque church on Piazza del Duomo in the historic center of Tivoli, in the Lazio region. It has a single main nave lined with lateral chapels, and a portico with three arches opening onto the square.
The site was first built over ancient Roman remains in the 5th century, making it one of the oldest Christian foundations in the area. Cardinal Giulio Roma then reshaped it in the Baroque style during the 17th century, giving it much of its current form.
The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Lawrence, one of the most venerated martyrs of the early Church. Locals still gather here for major religious celebrations, and the building remains an active place of worship at the center of town life.
The Romanesque bell tower next to the building is visible from several points around town and makes it easy to find the cathedral without a map. A morning visit tends to be calmer, as the square around it gets busier through the afternoon.
Inside the cathedral there is a 12th-century triptych that counts among the few surviving medieval artworks of its kind in the area. Next to it, frescoes painted by Angelo De Angelis in the early 19th century show Saint Lawrence together with other figures venerated locally, covering a wall that most visitors walk past without stopping.
