Castello Vagnone

Castello Vagnone is a castle built on a hillside between Turin and Monferrato, with a prominent central tower overlooking the town below. The building combines defensive walls with residential spaces that were added over centuries of occupation.

The castle first appeared in written records around 1209 as a defensive stronghold in the region. After significant destruction during a military conflict in the early 1700s, it was rebuilt and transformed into a residence for the local nobility.

The castle chapel, completed in 1792, displays architectural influences from renowned Italian architects Vittone, Toneschi, and Filippo Juvarra.

The location sits in Trofarello, a small town south of Turin, and is accessible on foot from the town center. Wear sturdy shoes for walking on the hillside path that leads to the entrance.

The castle remained in the hands of one family, the Vagnone Counts, for many centuries, with their lineage traced back to ancient Lombard origins. This long family ownership shaped how the building and surrounding town developed over time.
