Castle of the Princes of Acaja

Castle of the Princes of Acaja, Medieval castle in Fossano, Italy.

The Castle of the Princes of Acaja is a fortress in Fossano built with four strong corner towers and thick stone walls connecting them. The layout includes spacious inner courtyards surrounded by robust defensive structures that give the building its imposing form.

Construction began in 1314 under Philip of Savoy-Acaja as a defensive stronghold in northern Italy. The family ruled from here for generations, maintaining the castle as their seat of power until the late medieval period.

The rooms display artworks and objects tied to the Acaja family who ruled from here for centuries. Walking through the spaces, you can sense how nobility once lived and made decisions within these walls.

The castle is easily reached on foot from central Fossano with clear signage marking the main entrances. Wear sturdy shoes because stone stairs and floors are uneven in places, and some areas require navigating narrow passages.

Beneath the castle lies a network of secret underground passages that once connected different sections of the fortress. These hidden routes allowed inhabitants to move undetected through the entire complex during times of threat.
