Belagaio Castle, Medieval castle in Roccastrada, Italy
Belagaio is a castle with a quadrangular structure and crenellated tower standing in the Val di Farma Nature Reserve. It overlooks the surrounding valley and retains its medieval form combined with later residential modifications.
The fortress was first documented in 1187 and originally belonged to the Aldobrandeschi family. During the 13th century it came under the control of Siena.
The castle displays neogothic architectural features such as carved windows and a romanesque chapel that blend living spaces with spiritual functions. Visitors can observe how these details show the transformation from military structure to residential home.
Access is through an entrance portal with rusticated stonework originally from a private residence. The grounds are best explored on foot, with paths around the castle offering views over the valley.
The entrance portal with rusticated stonework was brought from the nearby village of Torniella. This architectural element came from another location and was intentionally incorporated into the castle.
