Castello del Boccale

Castello del Boccale is a rectangular fortified complex built on clifftops near Antignano, featuring three cylindrical towers positioned alongside the original Medici tower. Large stone-framed windows punctuate its walls and look toward the Tyrrhenian Sea below.

The structure was built in the 16th century as a defensive tower for the Republic of Pisa to monitor the coast. It later became a residential castle under the ownership of Marchioness Ugolini.

The castle reflects multiple layers of transformation from a defensive watchtower into a residential retreat, visible in its architectural details and design choices. Walking around it, you notice how different periods have left their mark on the building's character.

The structure underwent extensive restoration in the early 2000s and now houses private residential apartments with modern amenities. The clifftop location means visitors should be mindful of weather conditions, especially during windy periods.

The area is known as Pirates' Cove, and the cliffside location made it an effective spot for tracking ships at sea. This strategic position allowed those inside to monitor all maritime movements in the region.
