Cala del Leone

The area takes its name from Leone De Renzis Sonnino, nephew of Italian statesman Sidney Sonnino, who inherited the nearby castle and surrounding lands in 1922, establishing a lasting connection to this coastal region.

Local legends suggest the cove's name derives from the lion-like shape of surrounding rock formations, while the nearby Castello Sonnino represents one of the most significant neo-medieval architectural examples along this stretch of coast.

Access requires walking through Mediterranean scrubland and descending stone steps carved into sandstone cliffs, with visitors advised to wear appropriate footwear and exercise caution during rough sea conditions or high tide.

The cove sits between Calignaia and Torre del Romito promontory, offering visitors an undeveloped beach experience where the geological formations display sequences of turbiditic events from ancient seafloor deposits.
