Castello Sonnino, Gothic Revival castle in Quercianella, Italy.
Castello Sonnino is a Gothic Revival castle built on coastal cliffs in Quercianella, a small seaside village south of Livorno, in Tuscany. It has a tower, small battlements, and an external chapel, all constructed around an older tower that already stood on the rock.
The site traces back to a tower that stood here under Cosimo III de Medici, later rebuilt into a larger residence over time. Sidney Sonnino, who served twice as Prime Minister of Italy, bought the property in 1895 and gave it the name it carries today.
The castle shows how wealthy Italians of the late 1800s chose to design their homes and what architectural styles they favored. The blend of Gothic features and its seaside setting reflects the tastes of that era.
The castle is privately owned and visits are only possible through arranged guided tours that must be booked in advance. Drop-in visits are not accepted, so it is worth planning your trip well ahead of time.
Sidney Sonnino had a sarcophagus placed inside a grotto on the grounds and chose it as his own burial place. It is rare for a head of government to arrange a private tomb within his personal estate, and this detail often goes unnoticed by visitors.
