In 1594, Usimbardo Usimbardi, the first bishop of Colle di Val d'Elsa, encouraged local residents to increase their devotion to Saint Martial.
The church displays a 17th-century Florentine school canvas depicting Saint Martial performing a miracle on the main altar.
The church stands near the bridge over the Elsa River, in an area that witnessed the Battle of Colle in 1269.
According to tradition, the church was built over the tomb of Austriclinianus, who was resurrected by Saint Martial using a staff given by Saint Peter.
