San Marziale

San Marziale is a parish church in Gracciano dell'Elsa in Tuscany, positioned on elevated terrain and distinguished by an impressive raised entrance with a 19th-century loggia. A marble bust adorning the entrance depicts the local scholar Giovan Battista Schmidt.

The church is traditionally linked to an ancient tomb associated with Saint Martial, whose devotion took deep root in this region. In the 16th century, the first bishop of the area actively encouraged local residents to deepen their faith in this saint.

The church houses a 17th-century canvas from the Florentine school depicting Saint Martial performing a miracle above the main altar. This artwork reflects the local veneration of the saint that has remained central to the community's identity.

The building stands near a bridge crossing the Elsa River and is easily reached by a smaller footpath. The location offers a quiet setting for a visit, as it sits at the edge of the inhabited area.

According to local tradition, the building was constructed on the site of an ancient burial place where Austriclinianus lay entombed, a figure from early Christian legends. Saint Martial allegedly revived him using a staff that had been given by Peter.
