Porta Nova

Porta Nova features a central round arch flanked by two circular towers, with walls constructed primarily from brick and stone materials.

Built in 1479 as part of the Medicean fortifications, Porta Nova replaced the previous Porta Selva that was destroyed during the siege of the city.

Military architects Francione, Giuliano da Sangallo, Francisco d'Angelo, and Paolo di Francisco combined their expertise to create this Renaissance defensive structure.

Visitors can find free parking spaces to the right of the gate, while bus connections from Piazza Arnolfo stop directly in front.

The gate incorporates a covered moat system and features specialized architectural elements including machicolations, crenellated parapets, and strategic gunholes.
