San Matteo, Gothic church in central Genoa, Italy.
The church exhibits a striking facade of black and white marble stripes, featuring a central rose window flanked by two double-lancet mullioned windows.
Founded in 1125 by Martino Doria as a family chapel, San Matteo underwent complete Gothic renovation in 1278 and interior modifications in the 16th century.
The interior contains 16th-century frescoes and stuccoes by notable artists Luca Cambiaso and Giovanni Battista Castello, representing Renaissance artistic developments.
Visitors can explore the adjacent 14th-century cloister with its quadrangular design, small coupled columns, and ogival arches during regular opening hours.
The church crypt contains the tomb of Andrea Doria along with his ceremonial sword, given to the church by Pope Paul III.
