San Lorenzo al Ponte, Romanesque church and religious museum in San Gimignano, Italy

San Lorenzo al Ponte is a Romanesque church in San Gimignano with a simple brick facade, a portal, and a small mullioned window. The interior displays frescoes of religious scenes, with the architectural structure dating back to the 13th century.

The church was built in 1240 near a drawbridge of the Bishop's castle and has served as a place of worship since then. Over the centuries, various changes were made to the structure, including the closure of its gallery in the 16th century.

The frescoes on the interior walls show Christ surrounded by the Virgin and the apostles, created in the early 15th century. These images form part of the religious decoration that characterizes the space and reflects the devotional practices of the time.

The visit allows you to see the frescoes and architecture spanning several periods in a manageable space. The location is easily accessible and offers a good addition to a walk through San Gimignano's historic center.

The left side of the church features a portico originally built to protect a Madonna and Child fresco. This space was expanded in the 15th century and now serves as an adjacent area for visitors to explore.
