Santa Sofia

Santa Sofia is a baroque church in Giugliano in Campania featuring a single nave, side chapels, a transept, and a large dome designed by architect Domenico Fontana. The interior displays harmonious proportions and was later enriched with decorative stucco work.

Construction took place between 1622 and 1693, followed by significant renovations by architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro from 1730 to 1745. This renovation phase introduced new stucco decorations that reshaped the church's appearance.

The church houses the tomb of writer Giovan Battista Basile and displays paintings by notable artists such as Fabrizio Santafede and Giuseppe Marullo. These works shape the interior and reveal the place's artistic importance for the region.

The church is located at Piazza Giacomo Matteotti in the town center and is generally accessible to visitors. Its central position makes it easy to reach and allows you to explore the surrounding streets.

The bell tower was relocated stone by stone in 1890 and originally featured three marble reliefs. One of these reliefs depicting a pregnant woman became the symbol of Giugliano.
