The church construction occurred between 1622 and 1693, with later renovations by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro from 1730 to 1745, including new stucco decorations.
The church contains the tomb of writer Giovan Battista Basile and displays paintings by notable artists including Fabrizio Santafede and Giuseppe Marullo.

The bell tower, relocated stone by stone in 1890, originally displayed three marble reliefs, including one of a pregnant woman that became Giugliano's symbol.
