Santa Maria del Casale

Santa Maria del Casale is a Romanesque church in Brindisi built with white stone from Carovigno and local tuff arranged in geometric patterns across its facade. The interior features medieval artwork on its walls and showcases the craftsmanship of its decorative details and structural elements.

The church was founded in 1284 by Prince Filippo I of Taranto and became an important religious center. By 1310 it hosted significant trials that shaped its role in the region's religious history.

The interior walls display frescoes from the 1300s, including the Last Judgement and works by Rinaldo of Taranto. These paintings shape the visual experience of entering the space and reveal how the church communicated faith to visitors.

The building sits close to Brindisi Airport and is easy to reach. Visitors should expect uneven floors and steps inside, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

The building includes a refined cloister constructed in the late 1500s by observant minor monks and adjoining the main structure. This courtyard is less known than the church itself but offers a quiet retreat within the complex.
