Santa Maria di Castello

Santa Maria di Castello sits prominently on a hilltop position in Alessandria, featuring traditional Romanesque architectural elements and stone construction methods.

The church underwent multiple construction phases from 1486 to 1545, when its consecration marked the transfer of supervision from Mortariensi to Lateranensi religious orders.

Archaeological excavations between 1970 and 1973 revealed the foundations of an 8th-century pre-Romanesque church and a triapsidal structure from the 10th century.

The church contains multiple chapels for visitors to explore, including the first chapel on the right which houses a large 18th-century crucifix.

The interior displays a late 15th-century wooden crucifix above the altar and a sculptural group depicting the Deposition from the Tomb.
