Palazzo Ghilini

Palazzo Ghilini is a Baroque palace in Alessandria with a facade that displays symmetry and formal balance through large windows, ornate cornices, and detailed stone carving at the main entrance. The interior spaces follow classical proportions and currently serve administrative functions.

Marchese Tommaso Ottaviano II Ghilini commissioned this palace in the early 1700s under the direction of architect Benedetto Alfieri. The building expanded gradually over decades as different architectural influences were incorporated into subsequent additions.

The palazzo remains a place where visitors can observe how local nobility displayed their wealth and status through architectural choices. The building reflects the tastes and values of Piedmontese society during the 1700s.

The building now houses the Provincial Council headquarters and prefecture offices, which may limit public access to the interior. Visitors should check in advance whether guided tours or open days are available for viewing the rooms.

The palazzo was constructed in multiple phases over more than a century rather than all at once, and you can still notice the different architectural styles among its various wings today. This layered building history reveals how the tastes and construction methods of successive generations shaped the structure.
