Forte Diamante

Forte Diamante is a military fortress built on the Monte Diamante summit in Genoa, situated at approximately 667 meters in elevation. From this position, it overlooks both the Polcevera and Bisagno valleys that form the northern edge of the city.

The fortress was built in 1756 and served as the main defensive bastion against attackers from the north. It was part of a series of fortifications surrounding Genoa that protected the city over centuries.

The fort was part of an elaborate defensive system designed to protect Genoa from attacks coming from the north. Its walls and structures display typical features of 18th-century military engineering.

The fort is about six kilometers from central Genoa and can be reached via hiking trails that start from the base of the mountain. From the top, wide views over the surrounding valleys and the city reward the climb, so sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.

The strategic position allows for simultaneous surveillance of two major valleys, giving the fortress a central role in Genoa's entire defense system. From no other point could defenders gain such insight into the terrain north of the city.
