Forte Begato, Military fort in Genoa, Italy

Forte Begato is a military fort in Genoa perched at 475 meters (1,558 feet) above sea level with a square design anchored by four corner bastions. The central courtyard extends across multiple levels, creating the layout typical of 19th-century defensive structures.

Forte Begato was built between 1818 and 1831 by the Savoy Corps of Engineers as part of Genoa's defense network. This construction period marked an effort to strengthen the city's fortifications against potential threats.

This fort symbolized Genoa's military strength and its determination to defend itself during a turbulent period. Walking through the structure today, you can observe how the layout shaped daily life for those stationed there.

You can reach the fort by following Via del Peralto from Righi or by taking the historic walls trail from Belvedere Hill to Forte Sperone. The terrain is steep, so wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time for the walk.

The fort housed storage facilities for ammunition and large supply warehouses designed to support a garrison of around 840 soldiers. This infrastructure reveals the scale and importance of the installation in the city's defense strategy.
