The San Francesco da Paola basilica stands on the Caldetto hill with three naves and a large frescoed cloister overlooking Genoa's harbor.
Noble Ludovico Centurione funded the initial construction of the church in 1494, following Saint Francis of Paola's prophecy during his 1483 visit to Genoa.
The church contains the Spinola family tomb in its crypt, where Princess Veronica Spinola of Molfetta and numerous relatives rest beneath the main altar.
The basilica serves as a religious center for maritime workers, with daily services and special celebrations for seafarers during the first or second Sunday of May.
Each evening, the sanctuary rings the 'bell of the sea' to remember sailors lost at sea, continuing a centuries-old maritime tradition.
